Walkstation wins Innovation award at NeoCon 2008

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. — The new Walkstation from Details, a Steelcase company, has won an Innovation award in the technology support category at NeoCon 2008 in Chicago, the office furniture industry's largest trade show.

Of the 352 eligible products at NeoCon, just four won an Innovation award. The Walkstation also was recognized with a Best of NeoCon Silver award in the height-adjustable worksurfaces category.

The patent-pending Walkstation integrates a slow-moving treadmill with an electric height-adjustable worksurface, enabling office workers to stay active while chatting on the phone, sending e-mails, reading, and working on a computer.

Research suggests that increased physical activity among sedentary office workers may help improve productivity and keep healthcare costs in check. Users of the Walkstation can burn an additional 100 calories per hour while walking at a 1 mph rate.

“The Innovation award is a significant honor that recognizes the product's potential to affect the health of the entire workplace and its workforce,” says Details President Bud Klipa. “The Walkstation isn't intended to provide a gym-style workout in the office. The purpose is simply to increase movement while working and to enjoy the health benefits that can result.”

The treadmill component of the Walkstation is manufactured by TRUE Fitness Technology Inc., a leader in the fitness industry. The commercial-grade Walkstation treadmill operates within a limited speed range of ½–2 mph.

Introduced last fall, the Walkstation is the first product from Details' FitWork™ line, a category of products designed to bring healthy habits to sedentary workers while they're on the job. The base model includes both the treadmill and worksurface. Additional models are available with computer support, task lighting and organizational components to transform the worksurface into a full-fledged workstation.

The Best of NeoCon and Innovation awards are sponsored by Contract magazine, Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the International Facility Management Association and McMorrowReport.com.
